FLU infection in children – what parents need to know
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious viral respiratory infection causing sudden high fever, chills, cough, body aches, and extreme fatigue. Unlike adults, children frequently experience gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. Most children recover with rest and fluids, but prevention via annual flu vaccine is ideal.
Common Signs and Symptoms
- Sudden high fever and chills
- Dry cough, sore throat, and runny nose
- Muscle or body aches and headaches
- Extreme tiredness and weakness (fatigue)
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea (more common in kids)
- Encourage plenty of rest and sleep
- Keep your child hydrated with water and clear liquids
- Use a cool-mist humidifier or saline nose drops for congestion
- Manage aches and fever using acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed by your doctor
When to Seek Immediate Medical Care
Contact a doctor or go to the emergency room right away if your child shows these warning signs:
- Trouble breathing or very fast breathing
- Bluish or gray skin, lips, or nail beds
- Ribs pulling in with each breath
- Severe muscle pain where the child refuses to walk
- Signs of dehydration (no wet diaper or urination for 8 hours, dry mouth, no tears)
- Not alert, unresponsive, or not interacting when awake
- Fever above 104°F, or any fever in an infant under 12 weeks old.
